Jeep safari to La Gomera from Tenerife
Enjoy this one-day jeep excursion around La Gomera and discover a beautiful island full of contrasts.
Adventure, culture, history and breathtaking landscapes will make for one of the most enchanting days of your holiday in Tenerife.
The jeeps, with capacity for 7 passengers plus the guide/driver, are ideal for the island’s terrain, which is full of winding, narrow roads with continuous ups and downs that are not very accessible in other types of vehicles.
Our journey begins with a short ferry ride from the dock of Playa de los Cristianos, in the south of Tenerife, to the dock of San Sebastián de la Gomera, the capital of the island. In just 45 minutes we will cross the 40 km that separate the two islands. The boat is large and comfortable and during the crossing you can take the opportunity to have breakfast or simply enjoy the journey.
La Gomera, a small island of 370 square km and just over 20,000 inhabitants, awaits us. On our 4×4 tour we will cover approximately 100 km while getting to know the most interesting places in the centre and eastern side of the island.
During our journey we will encounter different types of scenery depending on the vegetation that surrounds us. We will discover numerous palm groves, cultivated areas and large forests.
We will drive up to the Garajonay National Park, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Here we will stop at a place called Laguna Grande to walk through the spectacular laurel forest. The name “laurisilva [laurel forest]” is the name given to this type of humid forests in Macaronesia which are made up of various species of trees, including the impressive laurels, heathers and beeches.
We will see the spectacular ravines of San Sebastián or the Hermigua Valley and appreciate the agricultural zones in the mountains which are filled with cultivation terraces.
We will take a break on a farm to learn the unique aspects of cultivating the internationally renowned Canary Island banana.
We will visit some spectacular volcanic domes known as Roques de Agando, Ojila, Marchita and Carmona.
The rock formation Roque de Agando, with a height of 180 metres, is the most iconic natural monument on the island.
As spectacular as the scenery is, no less so is the Silbo Gomero, a whistled language used by the ancient inhabitants of the island to communicate up to several kilometres away and which is still taught in schools today. We will be able to witness, with a demonstration between two Gomeran locals, how they are able to understand each other through these sounds.
We will have free time in San Sebastián de la Gomera, the capital of the island. Stroll through the streets of this small town of less than 10,000 inhabitants and visit some of its most outstanding monuments such as the Torre del Conde Park, the Casa Colón museum, or the Church of the Assumption [Iglesia de la Asunción].
From San Sebastian de la Gomera, we will take the ferry back to Los Cristianos and from there return you to your accommodation, where we will leave you with the hope that you have enjoyed a wonderful day of jeep touring around La Gomera, filled with memories that will last a lifetime.
MANDATORY: you must bring your passport or identity document to travel on the ferry from Tenerife to La Gomera, passengers are not admitted on board without it and you will lose the money payed for the tour
IMPORTANT: unlike excursions by bus, these 4×4 excursions allow us to stop in more place, have more personalised service (the clients are grouped by language and only one or two languages will be spoken in each jeep), and the pick-up and return times to the hotels are much shorter.
LUNCH: the meal will consist of a creamed vegetable soup as a starter and roast chicken with rice as the main course.
RECOMMENDATIONS: bring comfortable clothes, coats and jackets according to the season, comfortable, closed shoes and medication against sea sickness (if you think you may have this problem)
